Beyond his activities with Tesla, Naymon Frank is involved in public speaking and debate. He has spoken often on the link between football and head trauma.
In recent years, a number of studies and events have forced Americans to evaluate the safety of football, particularly the relationship between football and traumatic brain injuries. As these concerns become more prevalent, the nation’s high school football programs are seeing a continuous decline. While a 2018 survey released by the National Federation of State High School Associations still ranks football as the No. 1 high school sport in the nation, overall participation has fallen from 1.11 million in 2015 to 1.035 million in 2017, a decline of nearly 80,000 student athletes and part of a 6.6 percent decline over the last decade.
Furthermore, football is being dropped by more and more high schools for a variety of reasons. The sport ranks fifth in terms of the number of programs throughout the country. Approximately 20 programs were dropped ahead of the 2018-2019 school year. It should be noted that football’s decline in popularity among high school students has coincided with 29 consecutive years of increased student participation in athletic programming.
